What's on in Bilbao this September 2018

With the summer season coming to an end, the month of September is filled with music and cultural events to keep both locals and visitors busy during a city break. Have a look at what’s happening in Bilbao throughout September.


Music & Culture

Getxo Folk BBK: 13th – 16th September
The international folk festival will open its doors on the 13th of September for four nights of great livefolk music. Among the artists to perform this year there will be a number of Spanish artists as well as international ones: Korrontzi "Basque Selfie", Txarango, Elephant Arvanitaki from Greece, Fairport Convention from UK being in the spotlight of the festival, with many more to follow.

Franciscus Musical: 2nd – 7th September
Peace and love are the theme of this musical that honours Francisco de Asís; with 40 artists on stage, the musical harmoniously blends music with dance, theatre and film in.

The Michael Nyman Band: 27th September
Nyman's orchestra, combining a string quartet, saxophones, trumpet, horn, bass trombone, bass and piano will perform on the 27th September at Euskalduna Auditorium.

Events & Workshops

Open House Bilbao: 22nd – 23rd September
The open doors event will unveil nearly 60 buildings of architectural interest in two days, which are not usually open to the public. A guided tour of each building will be available, free of charge.
The Open House is an international architecture and urbanism festival, started in the UK back in 1992.

110 Years 110 Works: May – 17th September
The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is the venue for the 110 Works exhibited from May until September, housing paintings and sculptures to celebrate the museum's 110 years of existence.

Van Gogh to Picasso: 21st September 2018 – 24th March 2019
A new exhibition hosted by the Guggenheim museum is about to open: Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Manet, Picasso, and van Gogh outstanding work collections will be displayed for the first time outside New York.

Variations in the wind: 28th September
Under the guidance of Robert Treviño, Euskadi Symphony Orchestra will open a new season 2018/2019 with a concert featuring A. Webern, R. Lazkano and J. Sibelius, a mix of Basque music and beautiful Scandinavian symphony.

Outdoors and tours

Sopela Kosta Fest: 20th – 23rd September
Nature, surf and music is all Sopela Kosta is about. The fest spreads-out across few locations – the beach of Arriaterra – Atxabiribil and the beach of Barinatxe for surfing, the Townhall Square, Jauregizar Square and Kurtzio Kultur Etxea for the music and cinema events. El Columpio Asesino, Ms. Tomasa, Travellin 'Brothers Little Band, Grises, Liher are a few names to line-up on the stage this festival edition. Join the fest, there is something for everyone!
